Colored Co-Op Server Names

The first thing you will notice is that the text area will only allow you to enter 20 characters; most likely due to the fact that is really the amount that will show on the server browser screen (with a little blank space at the end) and the rest will just be cut off. The second thing you will notice is that you can’t enter any strange characters in the server name text area so that eliminates the obvious way of changing colors like has been possible in all versions of COD; using the carrot character along with a number 1 through 0 (^1 or ^5 etc. ).

So I opened the console and started to have a look around. The first command I started to enter right off the bat was “/ser” and wouldn’t you know it one of the available commands that came up was “/serverinfo“.  After entering the “/serverinfo” command I noticed that one of the ouputs listed was another variable called “sv_hostname” and it listed the current name of my server. So with another simple command of “/sv_hostname TEST” and then another “/serverinfo” I realized this was the command to change the server name. Being that this is done using the console you have full access to characters so now I tried the classic color code commands “/sv_hostname ^1TESTING” and bingo – I had a red server name.

So to summarize.

  • Start COD:WAW SP/CO-OP, launch your server and then go into GAME SETUP.
  • Now bring down the full console using SHIFT + ` (key above tab)
  • Enter the command “/serverinfo” to see your current server settings
  • Enter the command “/clear” to clear the console window
  • Enter the command “/sv_hostname ^1My ^2Server ^3Name” to give it a name
  • Enter the command “/serverinfo” to check and verify the name is how you want it
  • Press the ` key again to close out of the console
  • Play

Something to note when entering your text in the console is that you can actually type more than 20 characters now for the server name; however they will still be cut off on the screen in GAME SETUP as well as on the actual server browser list that everyone will see. I found 22 characters to fit best using a resolution of 1680×1050.

Colors codes are as follows:

^1 Red
^2 Green
^3 Yellow
^4 Dark Blue
^5 Light Blue
^6 Orange
^7 White
^8 White
^9 White
^0 Black

Playing Zombies?

I host WAW Zombies quite often so keep an eye out for my server:
CODV Zombies!-NoCheats

I go by LW-Dragon in WAW. Feel free to add me if you are a good Zombie player. I'm on the east coast in the US so I am always looking for good players on in my time.

Boycott COD:MW2

I am a PC gamer and I did not buy COD:MW2!

Instead I continue playing COD:UO, COD:WAW, Battlefield BC2 and some other single player games.
