COD:BO World Premiere Uncut Trailer

From the Call of Duty:Black Ops Intel Page:

The official Call of Duty: Black Ops trailer has arrived! This extended 90 second trailer is available first, exclusively on Black Ops, and is comprised entirely of in-game footage. It should set the scene we at Treyarch intend to capture this year with Black Ops.

One other little tidbit of information is that the callofduty.com domain name is now forwarding directly to callofduty.com/blackops so there is no more home page selection screen to go to the title of choice.

Dedicated Servers in COD:BO

In the latest issue of PC Zone magazine there was a question & answer session with  Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia and he offered a pretty clear picture that Call of Duty:Black Ops will definitely be including dedicated server support.

When asked whether the popular feature would be present in Black Ops in the new issue of PC Zone, Lamia replied, “I think dedicated servers are excellent. I don’t see any reason not to see them unless… well, I just don’t see any reason not to.”

“It seems people like them and we’re excited about what we’re doing right now.”

Lamia showed his appreciation of how much dedicated servers meant to a lot of PC gamers:

“We do work very hard to reconcile the desire to manipulate and modify those dedicated servers with offering them the persistent experience and benefits that the console system provides.”

“We’re working very hard to marry those two things, so people can run dedicated servers and also participate in the communal experience the console players get to have, given they’re all on first-party servers.”

The COD Franchise Killer – Bobby Kotick

It appears Activision Blizzard is considering a potentially controversial new way to generate revenue. During yesterday’s quarterly conference call, CEO Bobby Kotick hinted that the Call of Duty franchise will head the way of World of Warcraft and become subscription-based.

Activision Blizzard acts as the publisher of the Call of Duty games developed alternately by Infinity Ward and Treyarch. Though the franchise’s latest installment, Modern Warfare 2, was the best-selling video game of 2009 and generated more than $1 billion in revenue according to the NPD Group, Activision Blizzard still reported a $286 million loss in its fiscal fourth quarter. The loss was due, in large part, to the bottom falling out of the Guitar Hero franchise.

Conversely, Blizzard’s World of Warcraft franchise continues to be a cash cow for Activision, raking in $15 subscription fees from a reported 11.5 million people every month.

Put the pieces together and you can understand the company’s thinking: a financial loss, an enormously popular franchise, and a proven subscription model that generates a river of revenue. Kotick described the future of Call of Duty this way:

If you think about the success that we’ve had in other product categories on subscription, you can get a sense of the direction that we want to take that franchise.

World of Call of Duty? Subscription fees on the game’s online multiplayer? Kotick had nothing else to say on the matter, though the company did confirm that the next installment in the series is due out late this year.

If this subscription model does actually get applied; especially on the next installment of COD by Treyarch due out later this year, it will for sure be the killer of the Call of Duty series – especially after the blow that COD:MW2 did to the “true” COD community. The WOW community is a very different group of individuals than the COD community and a subscription based model for a FPS game like COD will only rid the game of the true players and leave the kiddies and casual gamers that feed off of their mom and dads bank account left to play.

Could this be the final stab in the heart of the COD gaming community minority?

1.6 Patch for WAW Available Friday

Around 8:00PM EST tonight JD_2020 (the Community Manger for Treyarch) made a quick “Tweet” that confirmed the 1.6 patch for PC would be available Friday September 18th!

After a handful of posts and tid-bits from both JD_2020 and PCDev over the last few weeks on the official COD:WAW forums regarding the progress of the patch and issues encountered; it was finally announced that the PC community would get the patch at some point this week and hopefully that day is finally here.

A “sticky” thread on the official COD:WAW forums was also updated by JD_2020 shortly after stating the following:

Patch 1.6 (w/ Map Pack 3) hits this Friday, the 18th! With it will be the Linux Dedicated 1.6 bins, Mod Tools 1.4 package, and Steam should be ready to go Friday as well =). I can’t wait!

Boycott COD:MW2

I am a PC gamer and I did not buy COD:MW2!

Instead I continue playing COD:UO, COD:WAW, Battlefield BC2 and some other single player games.
